Public transport in Baton Rouge

See selleks, varsti võtan ennast kokku sel teemal!

I'm sure many of you are waiting for stories about my amazing spring break in Florida, but I find it so difficult to put the whole vacation in words. So much happened and looks like I really need more time to figure out how to bring it to you. I wish I would have brought my laptop and explained all the details of each day, but I'll know better next time. I promise to write about it soon though. Before a little about our last weekend and public transport in Baton Rouge.

Oleksime vist kaks korda äärepealt avariisse sattunud.

The fist time we used public transport was actually several weeks ago, when we wanted to check out the big Louisiana mall. Already then it was very clear that even though there is a bus schedule, the buses never go according to it. Our first trip of 40 minutes was quite different. The bus was old, very old, most of the passengers were African-American, and on top, we drove by a neighborhood that is in a very bad shape. You really wouldn't want the bus to break down there.  I really didn't feel comfortable. Turns out most of the poorer citizens are African-American, and whoever can afford a car, will never take a bus. Fortunately we made it to the mall without any problems. Few weeks ago routes and schedules were changed so last Saturday we decided to try it once again.
Of course our bus was ten minutes late, but it's still better than 20 minutes. Also, we skipped the poor neighborhood and thus the trip was also a lot shorter. I could only wonder how the people who actually live there get around now, but let's hope they have a new bus route there too. The store we wished to go this time required taking two different buses. We didn't face any problems on our way there and easily found the store too. I wanted to go there already for a long time since they sell goods for known brands that are extremely overpriced especially in Europe, with very good deals. I was happy to find a suitcase suitable for handluggage from Samsonite for a great price. Done with shopping, we headed back to the bus stop and were happy to see a bus arrive on time. Although five minutes later I realized that we are headed to a totally wrong direction. Correct line, just wrong direction. So we stepped out in the middle of nowhere, hoping to find a bus stop near by across the street. And we did, and also a Starbucks for lunch. I also checked my new app when the bus would come, which indicated 50 minutes. That meant the same bus we just stepped out from. When we had our coffee and food and all settled down, we saw our bus 'flying' by. I was pretty miserable when I realized that my new app is as horrible as the whole public transport system. Once we finished our lunch, we just started to walk back, since we still had about 35 minutes until the next bus. Of course there are no walking paths so we simply walked on the grass right next to the road, as we are used to already. Just to add, the sun was bright in the sky and the temperature was at least 29 C. So we walked, with my new white suitcase, until we reach a bus stop that somehow looked okay, and waited for another 15 minutes. 90% of the stops are situated just there, on the grass, half a meter from the road. It's quite terrifying to sit there and think of all the poison you're breathing in. Finally in the bus, it stopped at the exact same stop where we took the wrong bus earlier, which was really confusing. Turns out you have to ask the driver where the bus is going, so we really couldn't have known earlier. Fortunately our home bus was again 10 minutes late, so we didn't miss it. It does however look like the bus drivers are fully aware of being behind schedule, since they drive way too fast. During the 20 minute ride we almost crashed twice.

VANA PILT, AGA ENAMUS BUSSIPEATUSED ON ENDISELT SAMASUGUSED/
OLD PICTURE, BUT MOST OF THE BUS STOPS ARE STILL THE SAME

Our plan to be home earlier to be on time to a cultural event by the international student union was totally ruined. We still made it though. Earlier when sitting at that bus stop we kind of hoped that nobody from who we know, would not see us, although we are used to all the weird looks from strangers. So we had a hard time trying to stop laughing later in the evening, when a couple approached us with this ''I think we have seen you before. Didn't you guys just sit at a bus stop few hours ago with a white suitcase?"

Louisiana State University

Louisiana State University on Louisiana osariigi suurim ylikool. 6pilasi on neil kokku umbes 30 000 ja 6ppida saab pea k6ike, muusikast keemiani ja ajakirjandusest arhitektuurini. Just t2nu sellele on (minu arvates) USAs v2lja kujunenud suured ylikoolilinnakud, et k6ik hooned koos kohvikute ja staadiumitega yhte kohta kokku pandud. Lisaks veel palju rohelust, yli6pilaselamud ja v2lja kukub yks igati kift kohake. P6hja v2ravast l6unasse on umbes 1,6 kilomeetrir (yks miil), ning sarnaselt ka idast l22nde.

Louisiana State University is the biggest university in the state, with an enrolment of about 30,000 students. It is possible to study whatever you wish, from music to chemistry and from journalism to architecture. I guess trying to fit all the buildings together with several stadiums and dorms is the main reason for a huge campus, like everywhere across USA. Just add lots of green and few nice cafes and you have a lovely studying and living environment. If I remember correctly, it is about 1,6 km from the North gate to the South gate and similar distance from east to west.

Eelmisel pyhap2eval jalutasime linnakus veidi ringi, tegimegi vist peaaegu t2is ringi peale. Kylastasime kohti, kuhu me veel ise polnud vajaduse puudumise t6ttu sattunud. K6ik hooned on ehitatud yhes stiilis, mis teeb linnaku h2sti kiftiks. Ja kevad on muidugi meeletult ilus, igasugu puud-p66sad 6itsevad ja k6ik on oh kui roheline. Vahel tuleb t6esti tunne, et olen m6nest Ameerika ylikooli filmist v2lja astunud, just nii k6ik t2pselt v2lja n2ebki.

Last Sunday Gerben and I took time to walk around the campus and shoot some impressions of the campus. We visited quite some places we didn't get to go yet, simply because we didn't have to. All the buildings are built in the same style, which makes it a whole. And we couldn't choose a better time for our stay as spring brings lots of flowers and green on the campus. Sometimes I really feel like I just stepped out from an American college movie!

Crawfish boil

Honestly, I really had no clue what a craw fish was until I crabbed a few from Ryan's plate a few weeks ago. That's also when everybody started talking about a craw fish boil, which I really had no idea of. But turned out it is a kind of gathering where a huge amount of craw wish is boiled in a big pot together with some veggies and spices. Since it's crawfish season, it's offered in many local restaurants and looks like this week many groups plan their own boil. Thus also our department has an annual crawfish boil this Friday. Surprisingly, last Saturday Ryan invited us out of town to his friend's place to have our own small crawfish boil and of course we couldn't say no to that!

State of the Coast 2014

Eelmine n2dal sai kiirel linnulennul l2bi, kuna jooksin aina yhest kohast teise. Esimesed paar p2eva siplesin, et oma esitama koolit66 2ra l6petada, kolmap2eval-neljap2eval kylastasime konverentsi ning ka reede kukkus l6puks v2gagi t66kas v2lja.
Kolmap2eva hommikul asusime teele New Orleansi, kus suurest konverentsist osa saime - State of the Coast 2014. P6hiteemadena arutati igasugused probleeme, millega Louisiana rannikuala peab tuleviku ees v6itlema.

Last week went by terribly fast, since I just ran from one place to another and back. The first few days I took time to finally finish some school work for last semester. Wednesday and Thursday we visited a conference in New Orleans and even Friday turned out to be very productive regarding to our project here (I guess at some point I will take time to write more about that!).
On Wednesday we drove down to New Orleans to take part of  a huge conference 'State of the Coast 2014'. As a main topic, all kinds of problems that the coast of Louisiana will face in the near future were discussed. On one hand, they talked about the past hurricanes, especially Katrina in 2005, their aftermath and how Climate Change can bring similar storms and floods more often. For example, a very hot topic covered measures which include relocation of coastal communities towards inland, since with sea level rise other options are simply not considered anymore at one point. This of course resulted in lots of comments from the people who actually live in these communities and don't want to leave since their family has lived on the same piece of land up to seven generations. On the other hand, the state is very eager to restore their wetlands and coast in general to make it safer and more resilient against hurricanes.

L6petasime kaks pikka p2eva m6nusas kohalikus restoranis New Orleansis. Reedel alustasime varase kohtumisega koolis, kuhu taas k6ik professorid kokku tulid. Jagasime palju vajalikku infot ja t66tasime pikalt terve p2eva. 6htu l6petasime taas yhise 6htus66giga, sel korral Jaapani buffees, kus nosisin imemaitsvat sushit.

New Orleans is about 1,5h away from Baton Rouge by car. Sine we didn't want to book a hotel down there, we simply drove back and forth twice. Our research professor from the NL had also come all the way to the conference with his colleague from the HZ, which made it even more interesting for Gerben and I to attend the event. It was definitely nice to see him there. We finished our two long days at a local cuisine restaurant in New Orleans. On Friday morning, a meeting was scheduled with our research team, including Gerben, Ryan and I, and the four professors, two from both sides of the bond. We shared lots of useful information and worked well the whole day. In the evening we had a goodbye dinner for our two Dutch professors at a Japanese buffet restaurant with amazing sushi!

St. Patrick's Day

Eelmisel laup2eval t2histati Baton Rouge-s Pyha P2triku p2eva, mille puhul korraldati uhke paraad. Muidugi ei saanud me sellest kuidagi m66da vaadata, eriti p2rast Mardi Grasi, kuhu paar p2eva hiljaks j2ima.

Last Saturday, Baton Rouge celebrated the St. Patrick's Day with a grand parade. As we had just missed Mardi Gras, we simply had to take part of the crazy green event!

Thoughts on restaurants and food

Aeg lendab kiirelt, juba saigi meie esimene n2dal l2bi.

Time flies and our first week in the US has already passed. Since we didn't want to cook at our temporary apartments, we mainly ended up eating out and few times at Ryan's too. Prices in the restaurants are relatively low, especially compared to the NL. I mean, as a student we barely go out for dinner there.
There are a lot of different dining places around the and in the LSU campus. Unfortunately, most of them are focused on fast food and sometimes it's difficult to find one that is not. Nevertheless, we have found already few that we really like!

KR6BEDAD FRIIKARTULID JUUSTU, BEEKONI JA HAPUKURGIGA /
CRUNCHY FRIES WITH CHEESE, BACON AND PICKLES

Alkoholi me restoranides eriti tarbinud pole, kuna siin ju vanusepiir 21.  Dokumenti kysitakse koheselt, kui lauast joogi tellid. Joogid serveeritakse alati ohtra j22ga.

A host will welcome you on the restaurant door. According to the amount of people in the group, she chooses a table from her 'map of tables', crabs forks and knifes and leads you to the table. After a few minutes, your waitress comes along, introducing herself and taking the order for drinks.
Water and refills are for free, meaning that even if you do order a coca or another soda, you only pay for the first glass and during the dinner, the waitress will come to pour you some more or give you a new glass of whatever you had earlier. When ordering alcoholic drinks, the waitress always asks for a document right away in the table, since the age limit here is 21.

We have tried out a few starters when we felt more hungry and understood that ordering one starter for two or even more people is more than enough. Portions are huge, especially the one time we got a hill of onion rings and ordered a brownie for each that turned out to be twice the size we hoped for. I am quite sure I have not finished a whole plate of main dish so far either, but if you wish , there's always the possibility to get a box and take the leftovers with you.
When it comes to paying the bill, the waitress asks how you would like to pay. Quite often it is no problem at all to pay it separately, without pointing out what everybody exactly had. First the bill will be brought to the table, and after you present your card, the waitress takes it to the register, swipes it and brings it back with two receipts - a copy for the restaurant, and a copy for yourself. It is important to sign the restaurant copy, together with adding a tip of 15% and the total amount you wish to pay.

Like I already mentioned, we have also had dinner at Ryan's a few times, enjoying some meats from the BBQ and playing around with his sweet dogs.
